Golf means everything to me: Vani Kapoor

Some seven years ago when Vani Kapoor entered the golf course with the sole purpose of spending some more time with her dad, never would she must have thought in her wildest dreams that the golf club would become her second home and the fairways her favourite playground.

But it was destined to be, as this Gurgaon girl, who started accompanying her father on the golf course, soon found herself getting attracted to the serenity of the ambience and the lure of holing the ball into the pin forced her into swinging the clubs.

There was no looking back thereafter, as from whipping the golf ball as a nine-year-old kid to making her entry into the Indian women squad for the 2010 Asian Games, Vani Kapoor has come a long way.

“Golf happened to me because of my father. Taking this game wasn’t deliberate. I started playing golf with the aim to spend more time with my dad, who is an avid golfer. But soon I started liking the sound of clubs hitting the balls and the pleasure of putting the ball into the pin, got me hooked to the greens. And now I can’t imagine my life without golf,” informs the 16-year-old Class XI girl from Shri Ram School Aravali, Gurgaon, who will be representing India along with Shreya Ghei and Gurbani Singh in the Guangzhou Asian Games in November this year.

“It’s a great honour. Donning the Indian colours in events of such magnitude is always an achievement and I am proud of being in the team. We will do our best to finish on the podium. With such an important tournament around, I am giving my hundred percent as far as my training is concerned,” says Vani, who finished top in the Order of Merit in the 2009/2010.

“I have been playing competitive golf in the national circuit for the past three years and have been representing India in various tournaments abroad. I have set a few goals for myself and I am striving hard to achieve that,” says the Gurgaon golfer, who won the Rolex Excellence Award for her performance in the last season.

“I had a great season, and to be recognised for that in front of so many people felt great,” says Vani who won the Southern India last September and followed that up with a win at the Noida Open in December. She also took home the Billoo Sethi trophy at the All India in Ahmedabad in early February, along with four runner-up finishes last season.

“I have achieved this in short span of time, so being amongst the top women golfers in the country means a lot,” says the youngster who trains under Anitya Chand.
